As you can probably tell from my last post, I'm suffering from a mild case of Tolkien-on-the-brain. I guess two viewings of The Two Towers in a 20 hour time period will do that to you.
I had a great time seeing the movie. The midnight show was especially exciting. It's definitely a film that benefits from a large and enthusiastic crowd, so it was a lot of fun to see the very first show. The seating arrangements were good, too. Miraculously, the numbering scheme worked out exactly as I described it. We didn't have to wait in line very long at all, and we still got great seats. We got lucky on that one.
As far as the film iself goes, I enjoyed it very much. I want to post a complete review, but I'm going to wait until more people have seen it. I don't want to spoil it for anyone. If you're reading this, go out and see the movie so I can share my thoughts with you.
You have about a week in which to accomplish this task, since I'm heading home for Christmas tomorrow. I might be able to post once or twice while I'm away, but I'm not sure. I hope you all have a Merry Christmas, if that's your thing. If it's not, have a good week. Talk to you in a few days!

The Two Towers took in an estimated $26 million on its first day, making it the seventh-best opening day in history.
If you want to know a few things about Hollywood, consider the fact that 19 of the top 25 opening days of all time occurred in the last two years.

Two Towers Update 2: We may have scored a major coup. Apparently a group affiliated with theonering.net has implemented a scheme for the first screening in which they hand out numbers to ticketholders that secure a place in line. Ticketholders will then be admitted to the theater in the order of their number. Our friend who got in line at 7 AM has allegedly secured us numbers 119 and 120 out of 808, which means we'll get pretty good seats. This scheme also means that we won't have to wait around in the rain.
Apparently the people from theonering.net made some arrangement with Cinerama that enables them to manage the entry process. I'm not sure about the legal ramifications of this. What happens when someone challenges their authority? Will there be official theonering.net militia on hand to enforce their rule? We'll have to wait and see if this temporary junta is able to contain the teeming hordes clamoring to get their long-awaited dose of elves.

Two Towers Update: The plan is to meet at Cinerama between 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM. Apparently another friend of ours has been waiting in line since 7:00 AM. We are way out of our league.
I am approaching this event as if I were going on a camping trip. I brought my Gore-Tex and my hiking boots to wear if it rains. I went to Target at lunch and bought a pair of folding chairs so we'll have a place to sit/sleep while we wait. I stopped short of packing the camp stove and the dining fly.
Bring on the nerds!

Whew! This weekend was wall-to-wall Christmas parties, shopping, and present wrapping. My shopping is now 96.15% complete. I have only one present left to buy, but it's a doozy. I have no idea what to get this person, and I only have a day or so to think of something. I hope they like Long John Silver's.
One of the reasons my shopping time is so limited is because I am spending nearly all of Wednesday watching The Two Towers. The planets aligned themselves in such a way that I am seeing the very first show at 12:01 AM at Cinerama on Wednesday, and then I'm seeing it again that night at 8 PM.
Before you start accusing me of being a hopeless nerd, allow me to explain. I didn't plan it this way. I'd planned to go sometime in the first week to celebrate a friend's birthday, but then another friend of mine got tickets to the midnight show and asked me if I wanted to go. Who was I to turn down such an opportunity? It soon became clear that the only night that the birthday crowd could gather was Wednesday night, roughly 16 hours after the first viewing ended. I couldn't very well abandon the party, now could I?
Not that I'm complaining, mind you. I loved the first movie, as previously mentioned here, and I expect that the second one will more than stand up to two viewings in one day. I just want to make it clear that I'm not one of these people that dresses up like a hobbit and speaks Elvish. Not that there's anything wrong with that, I suppose, but I do have an actual life. I think.
The evidence to the contrary is that I will be taking the day off of work on Wednesday because of this. I won't get out of the movie until 4 AM, and I figure that it will be a waste of everyone's time for me to come into work. I'm going to sleep late and spend the afternoon at home packing before getting in line again for the evening show.
I've done stupid stuff like this before, but not lately. I definitely feel like I'm getting too old to wait in line like this. I don't know when we're going to get in line on Tuesday, but we're going to be there a long time. I also noticed that it's supposed to rain, which will make it even more fun. It's going to be an interesting day, that's for sure.
